Anne Wojcicki co-founded 23andMe in 2006 and pioneered the direct-to-consumer genetic testing industry — enabling ordinary people to learn their ancestry, health predispositions, and carrier status for genetic conditions without a doctor's referral. Born in San Mateo, California in 1973, Wojcicki earned a biology degree from Yale and worked as a healthcare investor before founding 23andMe. Her confrontation with the FDA in 2013 — which temporarily shut down health-related features — and her subsequent navigation of the regulatory landscape defined the path for consumer genomics. 23andMe's database of over 14 million genotyped customers became one of the most valuable genetic research assets in the world.
