Madam C.J. Walker became America's first self-made female millionaire in the early 1900s by developing and marketing a line of haircare products for Black women — building a business empire of over 40,000 sales agents through a direct sales model she invented. Born Sarah Breedlove in Delta, Louisiana in 1867 to formerly enslaved parents, she was orphaned at seven and widowed at 20. She developed her Walker System of haircare products after suffering hair loss and built a manufacturing and distribution network from scratch. Her Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company was one of the largest Black-owned businesses in America and a landmark achievement in the history of women's entrepreneurship.
