Daymond John founded FUBU in Queens, New York in 1992 with $40 and a sewing machine, financing early production by mortgaging his mother's house, and grew it into a $6 billion hip-hop fashion brand that dominated urban streetwear in the 1990s. Born in Brooklyn in 1969, John worked at Red Lobster while building FUBU, teaching himself manufacturing and distribution from scratch. His breakthrough came when LL Cool J wore FUBU in a Gap commercial, generating national exposure at zero cost. John later became a star investor on ABC's Shark Tank, making him the most visible face of small-business entrepreneurship in American popular culture.
