Richard Branson founded Virgin Records in 1972 from a church pew in London and built the Virgin brand across over 400 companies spanning music, airlines, telecommunications, trains, health clubs, banking, and space tourism. Born in Surrey in 1950 and dyslexic, Branson left school at 16 and launched a student magazine before pivoting to mail-order record sales. His willingness to enter any industry he felt was ripe for disruption and his talent for spectacular publicity stunts — crossing the Atlantic by speedboat, flying around the world by balloon — made him the most colorful entrepreneur of the 20th century. Virgin Galactic made him one of the first private citizens to fly to the edge of space in 2021.
