Tony Hsieh sold his first company LinkExchange to Microsoft for $265 million at age 24, then joined Zappos as CEO and built it into the internet's gold standard for customer service — selling it to Amazon for $1.2 billion in 2009. Born in Illinois in 1973 to Taiwanese immigrant parents, Hsieh transformed Zappos from a shoe website into a company celebrated for its culture, where customer service representatives were empowered to spend unlimited time on calls and send customers flowers. His book Delivering Happiness became a bestseller on building company culture, and his philosophy that the best customer service is the best marketing influenced a generation of startup founders.
