Confirmation bias is the tendency to search for, interpret, and remember information in a way that confirms what you already believe — while ignoring or dismissing evidence that contradicts it.
How It Works
- You form an opinion or hypothesis
- You unconsciously seek out information that supports it
- You discount or rationalize away anything that challenges it
Real-World Damage
- Investing: Holding a losing stock because you only read bullish analysis
- Politics: Consuming only news that matches your existing views
- Relationships: Interpreting a partner's neutral actions as hostile once trust is broken
- Science: Designing experiments to prove rather than test a hypothesis
How to Counter It
Actively seek out the strongest case against your own position. Ask: What would I need to see to change my mind? If you can't answer that, you're in confirmation bias territory.
