The availability heuristic is the mental shortcut of judging the likelihood of an event based on how easily examples come to mind — not on actual statistical frequency.

Why This Distorts Reality

Vivid, recent, or emotionally charged events are more mentally accessible — so we perceive them as more common than they are.

Classic Distortions

  • Plane vs. car: People fear flying more than driving, even though cars are far more deadly per mile
  • Shark attacks: Widely feared, vanishingly rare. Vending machines kill more people per year
  • Crime: Heavy news coverage makes crime feel worse than the data shows
  • Investing: After a market crash, investors overestimate the chance of another crash

The Fix

When assessing risk, look for base rates — actual statistical frequencies — rather than trusting how easily something comes to mind.
