The Normandy landings on 6 June 1944 were the largest amphibious invasion in history. Allied forces landed on the coast of German-occupied France, opening a major western front against Nazi Germany.
D-Day mattered because it made the liberation of western Europe possible and forced Germany to fight an immense land war on multiple fronts. It remains one of the most iconic operations of the Second World War.
