The Battle of Vienna ended the Ottoman siege of the Habsburg capital when a relief army led in part by the Polish king John III Sobieski attacked the Ottoman forces. The battle broke the siege and became a major milestone in European-Ottoman conflict.
Vienna had enormous symbolic and strategic significance. It helped mark the beginning of a shift in momentum away from Ottoman expansion into central Europe and remains one of the most famous sieges in history.
