
The Battle of Tannenberg was a major German victory over Russia on the Eastern Front during World War I. German commanders Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff encircled and destroyed much of the Russian Second Army.
Tannenberg became one of Germany's greatest early war victories and a powerful propaganda triumph. It exposed deep weaknesses in Russian military coordination and command.
