
The Battle of Leyte Gulf was the largest naval battle of World War II and one of the largest in history. A series of engagements around the Philippines saw American and Allied forces defeat Japanese naval efforts to disrupt the liberation of Leyte.
Leyte Gulf mattered because it crippled the remaining power of the Imperial Japanese Navy as an effective strategic force. It also highlighted the growing dominance of carrier aviation and modern naval coordination.
