The Battle of Bouvines was fought in northern France between King Philip II of France and a coalition led by the Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV and King John of England's allies. Philip's victory decisively strengthened the French monarchy.
Bouvines had outsized constitutional and political importance. It elevated Capetian France, weakened imperial and English positions, and indirectly contributed to the pressure that produced Magna Carta in England.
