The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single day in American military history. Union forces under McClellan confronted Lee's Confederate army in Maryland and halted the first major Confederate invasion of the North.
Tactically inconclusive, Antietam nevertheless delivered a strategic Union advantage. It gave Abraham Lincoln the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, linking the war more clearly to the destruction of slavery.
